AT&T has acknowledged that over 51 million current and former customers had their personal data compromised in a data leak that occurred in 2021, as disclosed by ShinyHunters and later confirmed by Major Nelson last month.
This revelation follows the discovery that the dataset involved information from more than 70 million individuals. AT&T clarified that the variance in numbers stemmed from the existence of multiple accounts belonging to some affected individuals. While the exposed information varied by individual and account, AT&T emphasized that no personal financial details or call histories were included in the leaked data, which spanned up to June 2019.
Despite providing assurances regarding the nature of the leaked information, AT&T did not offer any insights into the cause of the breach or the delay in confirming it, spanning nearly five years. The disclosure of this incident has led to the initiation of several class-action lawsuits against AT&T.
